About

Being a so-called Gen-Y I suppose it should be easy to talk about myself. Apparently we think we’re God’s gift to the modern workforce and our bosses are all lucky to have us. Well….I’m not going to proclaim to be an expert on anything, and who wants to be an expert anyway? It has been said once and I’ll say it again,

an expert is someone who knows more and more about less and less, until they know everything about nothing.

I like to dabble in a bit of everything and it is still early in my IT career so I am yet to determine what really spins my wheels. For the time being, I am enjoying what I do and am learning a lot every day. So, I hear you ask yourself,

well…how did I get here?

I studied Biochemistry and Genetics at Massey University, Palmerston North, and came out of that with a BSc(hons) after four hazy years. If you’ve ever been to Palmy you’ll know what I’m talking about… A couple of years spent as a Research Assistant in a couple of different laboritories left me with the realisation that I hated being in the lab. I far preferred being in front of a PC (Mac lovers leave sarcastic comments below) and thus made a difficult career choice and left my job to embark on life as an IT geek.

I was working as the Service Desk Team Leader for a Christchurch IT company. This involved day to day managing of  Service Desk as well as providing IT support remotely for dozens of external clients. I have a fun project currently on the go where I am trying to integrate our call management software (BMC Service Desk Express) with SharePoint to provide a service portal for our external clients. Following on from this project, I have recently been given the great opportunity to get more into SharePoint and have accepted a position as a SharePoint Consultant.

I love hearing from other girl geeks. IT has always been and is still a male dominated industry. There are endless opportunities for talented women in this sector so it’s time to embrace your inner geek!

In my spare time I like to shop, drink wine, dance, play Wii and develop websites. I usually stay up far too late and am not functional until I have had my morning coffee. I love Twitter and am on a mission to get the #geeksthenewblack hashtag trending. One can dream….
